Letter in Chinese script, signed by Chiang Kai-shek, addressed to Sir W.D. Ross, Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, from 1929 to1947 and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1941 to 1944, with contemporary translation reading "I am writing to thank you for your letter of January 18, which I have read with great pleasure. It was kind of you and your colleagues to extend numerous courtesies to the members of the Chinese Mission to Britain while visiting your University. I am glad to learn that you had discussions with them for finding out ways for closer cultural cooperation between our two countries. I have advised the Ministry of Education to have consultations with the members of the Mission in order to strengthen Sino-British cultural relationship specially emphasizing the effective cooperation of universities. Please convey to the Council of the University as well as Prof. Lindsay and Dr. Adams my appreciation of their abounding goodwill toward China", two pages, on partly printed Chinese rice paper, folding marks, some foxing and age-related toning, one small loss to paper, 4to, 'Headquarters of the Generalissimo', 7 June 1944; with original mailing envelope (3)
