The University of Notre Dame is typical of numerous libraries and bibliographies in arguing that “the narrative seems to have been composed around 1806 (when Mendoza spent time in debtor’s prison) but left unpublished until 1816. Though the title page designates this as a ‘new edition,’ no copy of an earlier edition is known.” Hartley lists the ‘new edition’ only.
