A JAPANESE CINNABAR LACQUER INCENSE BURNER STAND

Edo period, possibly 18th Century

The barbed quatrefoil tray finely carved to depict a pair of scholars sat in a pine grove, drinking tea and looking out at the rocky landscape beyond, the sides with a band of incised key fret, supported by a recessed quatrefoil stem decorated with wan patterns terminating in a band of slender petals below, the curving base carved with large flowering peonies borne from leafy stems and raised on four cabriole legs
