A Victorian sterling silver snuff box, Birmingham 1852 by Hilliard and Thompson

Of oblong form with a hinged lid raised by a chased thumbpiece. Engraved decoration of foliate scrolls, the lid with initials JJB and the motto Let Brotherly Love Continue, surmounted by a crest of a stag, the mantling flanked by crossed arrows. The gilt interior engraved to the lid with “British Foresters Southampton Unity Presented to Br John James Burnett with a gold watch chain by the members of the Purkess lodge in testimony of their appreciation of the very efficient services rendered by him as secretary to the lodge, during the last three years, 12th January 1857.”. Together with another snuff box, Birmingham 1870 by Frederick Marston, oblong form with engine turned decoration, the lid engraved “To Dr Dickenson from E.M.G. 1871”. Gilt interior. Both fully marked. (2)
