A SEATED PORTRAIT OF AURANGZEB (R. 1658 - 1707), THE SIXTH EMPEROR OF THE MUGHAL EMPIRE, PROPERTY FROM A LONDON PRIVATE COLLECTION, Mughal Provincial School, India, late 18th - early 19th century, opaque pigments and gold on paper, the vertical composition portraying Emperor Aurangzeb, also known by his regnal title Alamgir, seated on a golden throne (takht) under a caparisoned parasol, reading a manuscript with tooled leather bindings reminiscent of Ottoman Qur'ans, clad in a typical Mughal attire with a white muslin cotton robe and a fur-lined embroidered gilt overcoat, the portrait pasted onto a later album page with illuminated borders with floral sprays on blue ground and gold speckling on cream ground, mounted, glazed and framed, the painting 17.8cm x 13.2cm, 42cm x 31.8cm including the frame.
