AN UNUSUAL GOLD-DAMASCENED STEEL-HILTED DAGGER (KHANJAR) North India, 19th century  With edged wootz damascus watered steel blade, the steel handle overlaid with gold-damascened (koftgari) foliate tendrils and floral scrolls along the edges and on the pommel, the scabbard of red velvet with metal-thread trimmings, 31.5cm including scabbard. Daggers and swords in which the hilt as well as the blade are of wootz damascus watered steel are relatively rare. A tulwar attributed to the 18th century and with similar gold overlay work around the edges of the hilt was offered at Christie's London, 7 April 2011, lot 189.
