λ AN INDO-PORTUGUESE IVORY-INLAID HARDWOOD FURNITURE PANEL
Possibly Gujarat or Goa, Western India, 18th - 19th century
Of rectangular shape, possibly once used as the outward-opening panel of a trunk or a large vargueno cabinet, each side finely inlaid with engraved ivory tesserae carved in a variety of vegetal and floral motifs including stylised lotus flowers, scrolling and interlocking split palmette trellis, and serrated saz leaves on the outer borders, and two overlapping rows of lush bouquets of beloved Mughal flowers like carnations, irises, narcissi, and roses in the centre, with a later-added brass lock plate, 44.3cm x 69cm x 2.5cm.
