***Unrecorded variant state between the first edition (ESTC N62545) and the ‘new edition’ corresponding to ESTC T223152. This copy’s title page states that it was ‘Printed and sold (for the author)’ and is undated and the frontispiece is from the first edition: ‘at Stilton’ (as opposed to ‘at Doncaster’).
The text corresponds with ESTC T223152 up to the final Chapter (VIII), which corresponds with the first edition up to the final lines:
First edition: “Mendoza answered the letter, and expressed his willingness to meet him; but some difficulties started with respect to time; and the matter rests at present in a state of uncertainty.”
This copy: “Mendoza answered the letter, and expressed his willingness to meet him; but some difficulties started with respect to time: these however have been since removed, and they are expected shortly to have a third trial.”
