The tall rounded body with a gently flared rim painted with a spray of grapevine foliage and tendrils, the base signed Kakiemon with a kao, the rim with a crack restored with kintsugi lacquer, together with a certificate of authenticity and a fitted tomobako wood box, the cover signed and sealed by the artist

Sakaida Kakiemon XIII, born Sakaida Shibuo (1906 – 1982), the 13th generation member of the Kakiemon Family of ceramicists dating back to early Edo period. Unlike his father who closely followed traditional working methods, young Shibuo drew his inspiration from nature and attempted to expand the conservative Kakiemon pattern book. In 1953 together with his father they recreated nigoshide, the white porcelain body, a 17th century technique which faded into obscurity. In 1973 Kakiemon XIII was designated a Japanese Living National Treasure.
