Wilson (Edith) Head and shoulders photographic portrait by Arnold Genthe of Edith Wilson, wife of President Wilson, signed by the sitter ('Edith Bolling Wilson'), some silvering to darker portions of image, in original oak frame, overall height 48cm. ***After President Wilson suffered a severe stroke in October 1919, his wife Edith began to screen all matters of state and decided which were important enough to bring to the bedridden president. In doing so, she de facto ran the executive branch of the government as acting president for the remainder of her husband's second term, until March 1921.
