John Deakin (1912-1972)
A BOX OF WORK PRINTS, 1950s-1960s. A group of vintage silver gelatin prints (30), image sizes 290 x 365mm (17), 255 x 315mm (4); 305 x 490mm (9, comprising two prints backed with paper and joined together with tape), eight with Deakin's annotations in pencil verso, one with a BL Kearley agency stamp verso. This group of work prints was compiled by BL Kearley, an agency that worked with Deakin in the 1950s. The present group of prints contains a mix of subject matter, including two well-known subjects, Kenneth Tynan (1952) and Siobhán McKenna (1952), a scene in the French House, Soho, showing propietor Gaston Berlemont behind the bar, three large-format contact sheets of a dance hall, street scenes in Paris, nuns in Rome, unidentified portraits, and one portrait of Orson Welles smoking a cigar, annotated "reject - Oct Brogue, 1951" in pencil on the verso in an unknown hand. Together with one three-frame contact strip measuring 255 x 62mm, depicting Picasso in an unknown sitting.
