THREE RELIGIOUS MANUSCRIPTS IN MAGHRIBI SCRIPT
Morocco, North Africa, late 18th and late 19th centuries
Arabic manuscripts on paper, comprising a prayer book, 77ff., each folio with 9ll. of red and black ink maghribi script within a circular rule, diacritic marks in red and ochre yellow, inscribed 1196 AH (1781 - 82 AD), in a brown calf flapped binding, with a red-dyed flapped morocco satchel, the front with red embroidery and knotted silk toggle and loop fastening, the text panel diameter 10.7cm, the folio 9cm x 9.5cm, the satchel 12cm x 12cm; an Al Jazuli’s Dala'il Al Khayrat, 163ff. plus two fly-leaves, each folio with 6ll. of black ink maghribi script, illuminations marking holy sites in red and black, significant words in red, gold, and blue, verse markers in red, chapter headings in red, with catchwords, set within red and blue rules, in a fine dark brown tooled morocco binding, the text panel 7.8cm x 6.9cm, the folio 9.8cm x 10.2cm; and another similar manuscript, 109ff., each folio with 9ll. of black ink maghribi script, in a flapped blind-tooled red morocco binding, dated 14 Muharram 1312 AH (17 July 1894 AD), the folio 12cm x 10.5cm.
