After coming down from Pembroke College, Cambridge, he served in the Royal Field Artillery during the First World War. He was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant to the Royal College of Arms in 1928. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve at the beginning of the Second World War and died on active service in Egypt.
