Rare pair of antique George III Provincial Irish Sterling Silver goblets by Carden Terry of Cork, c1770. Marked 'CT' to the bases, without 'STERLING'. The cups are also marked 'No 1' and 'No 2' respectively. On tapering pedestal feet with original, contemporary gadrooned decoration. Both crested with a Gryphon's head. Height 16cm / 6.25". Silver weight 431g / 13.85 troy oz. The Artist Carden Terry (1742-1821) was apprenticed in Cork in 1758 and was advertising his services as a silversmith by 1764. In 1784 he registered his mark with the Dublin Goldsmiths' Company and in 1785 he gained Freedom of the City of Cork. Carden Terry's work continued to be among the most desirable of all Irish silver.
