DAVID HOWELL (BRITISH B. 1939)
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ENGLISH COLLECTION
Caravan north of Najran, Saudi Arabia
signed David Howell (lower left)
watercolour
44 x 69 cm

Najran is a city in southern Saudi Arabia, close to the border with Yemen. Its population has grown from under 50,000 some 50 years ago to its present population of about 500,000. Najran has been inhabited for about 4,000 years, and was known to the Romans as Negrana. Although this painting is perhaps only 20 to 30 years old, it is reminiscent of the style of painting by earlier travellers in the Middle East. In 1985, David Howell published a book about Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) which is illustrated with many of his watercolours. The book is “City of the Red Sea – David Howell’s Jiddah”, published by Scorpion Publishing.
