CHINESE SCHOOL (QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY)
The junk fighting against strong winds and dark waves
oil on canvas
51 x 38 cm

A junk is a form of Chinese sailing ship which historically served as cargo transportation or as pleasure boats. Such large junks as seen in the present picture, had a major role in Asian trade until the 19th Century. A recorded example of one of these boats (which has a similar construction to the ship in the present painting) was named Keying and sailed from China (around the Cape of Good Hope) to America and then England between 1846 and 1848.
