Literary Diary.-
A notebook comprising excerpts from the novels ‘The Stage Coach’, ‘Christmas Eve’, ‘Christmas Day’, ‘The Christmas Dinner’, from ‘The Sketch Book’ of Geoffrey Crayon, excerpts from the novel ‘Visit to Chillon’, by the Rev. W. B. Clarke, illustrated with 2 small watercolours, ‘A Visit to the Monastery of La Trappe in 1817…’; by W. D. Fellowes Esq. illustrated with a view of the monastery, & ‘The Grand Tour’ by Mr. Nugent, with regards to the Camposanto in Pisa, illustrated with a view of the inside of the burying place. The diary also includes 15 fine watercolours depicting the archaeological site of Pompei, as well as 2 watercolours representing Bidborough Church, and a collection of engravings, particularly 22 hand finished copper engravings from ‘Les Nations. Album des Costumes des Tous les Pays’, by Alexandre Lacauchie (Paris, Maison Martinet, 1850s), light age yellowing, contemporary blind tooled calf, a.e.g., a little rubbed, 4to, 19th century.
*** A charming notebook unveiling an interest in ‘Grand Tour’ and travel literature. The initial pages curiously contain parts of ‘The Sketch Book’ of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by the American author Washington Irving, and published serially throughout 1819 and 1820.
