Jiang Zhaohe is regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, playing a pivotal role in the development of brush and ink painting. Jiang combined chiaroscuro and Western-style portraiture with traditional brush and ink techniques, and is celebrated for his veristic figure paintings that reflected the harsh reality of life for many people during the 1930s and 40s. Displaying a sense of profound compassion, the artist was committed to creating accurate depictions of soldiers, refugees, and those stricken with poverty. Jiang said of himself: 'there are few who know or love me; only the poor knows me and only the famished do I sympathise.'
