Manifesto of the Communist Party.
fifth edition, first authorized English translation of the Communist Manifesto, 32pp., original printed paper wrappers, stapled as issued, covers loose, upper edge of front cover chipped, signs of browning, fragile but complete, previous ownership signature to verso of front cover ‘A.Knight’, [PMM 326 (first edition)], 8vo., 1888

Manifesto of the Communist Party was subjected to a defective English translation in 1850 which rendered the famous opening line, ‘A spectre is haunting Europe’, as ‘A frightful hobgoblin stalks throughout Europe’. The present translation was overseen by Engels himself, with the assistance of Samuel Moore.
