A GATHERING AT THE MUGHAL EMPEROR JAHANGIR’S COURT (DURBAR)

Opaque pigments, ink and pencil heightened in gold on paper, the vertical composition depicting a courtly gathering with important personalities of Mughal India, on the left the Emperor Jahangir portrayed enthroned whilst conversing with the courtier standing in the centre of the durbar, to the right a group of Jahangir’s advisors including Abu’l Fazl, Hindu Rajas and a Mullah, each character sumptuously dressed with robes and accessories in line with earlier illustrations, and identified by later-added handwritten captions in black ink, the border inspired by earlier Mughal muraqqa’ (album) borders with intertwined floral and vegetal scrolls in gold and heightened in polychromes, the recto plain, mounted on a white cardboard frame, 35.7cm x 25.4cm.
