A CHINESE BAMBOO 'HORSES' BRUSH POT, BITONG

20th Century, dated to the yiyou year (1945), signed Ma Jin

二十世紀 乙酉(1945年 )竹雕雙馬圖紋筆筒

《馬晉》; 《乙酉孟春》款

Of cylindrical form, carved in relief to depict a pair of horses in a woodland clearing, with accompanying inscription that reads yiyou mengchun and ma jin

14cm diameter, 16.2cm high

NOTE:

This brush pot is dated to the yiyou year in the inscription, corresponding to 1945. Ma Jin (1900 - 1971) was a painter who primarily concerned himself with depictions of horses, often in pairs in naturalistic landscapes. See some examples of his paintings depicting horses, for instance at Christie's Hong Kong, 31 May 2023, lot 1217, and the same rooms, 29 Nov 2016, lot 1332.
