Church History.- Zane (Bernardo) [Niger (Thomas)]

Oratio Reverendissimi D. Archiepiscopi Spalatensis habita in Prima Sessione Lateranen[sis] Concilii, title within architectural woodcut border, provided in facsimile?, upper edge trimmed, small woodcut initial, occasional spotting, new preliminaries, ex libris of Ivo Dubravčić, modern quarter morocco over marbled paper boards, gilt title to spine, [BL, Italia Books, 741; Adamas Z 60; Ascarelli 51], 4to, Jacopo Mazzocchi, Rome, 1512.

*** Scarce edition on Turkish warfare in Dalmatia, which plagiarised the famous eye-witness account of Egidius from Viterbo of the Turkish conquest of Split. No copies recorded in Italian public libraries. Bernardo Zane or Zanni (ca. 1450-1524) was archbishop of Split. Mazzocchi’s production was so copious and varied that he became one of the most prolific printers in Rome in the early 16th century. Not infrequently the works had an official character and were protected by papal privileges. Mazzocchi financed his editions and personally cultivated relations with the Curia, university authorities and scholarly circles.

Provenance. From the collection of Ivo Dubravčić, who gathered ‘cimelia croatica’. Two exhibitions of his treasures were organised in 2004 & 2005 ('Cimelia Croatica from the Collection of Ivo Dubravčić' 2005 & 'Memories of a Ban – The Jelačić Legacy in the Croatian History Museum' 2009).
