AN UNCUT MUHARRAMAT TERMEH SHAWL
PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
Possibly Yazd, Iran, 19th century
Woven in narrow bands of red, green, magenta, orange, black, white, and indigo, woven with very small repeating floral motifs, the end loom fringes tied, 179cm x 86cm.
In contrast to Western fashion, where stripes often had negative symbolism and connotations like in the case of prison garbs, Persian and Indian shawl weavers routinely employed striped designs as auspicious motifs.
Dimensions: 179cm x 86cm
