Notes: Born in Wakefield in 1937, David Wood trained as a painter and lithographer at Wakefield College of Art and as an art teacher at the Regional College of Art, Manchester. He also gained an M.A.in Drama and Theatre Arts from Leeds University.
During his teaching at Allerton Grange School in Leeds, a number of well-known artists were his pupils, including Damien Hirst, Marcus Harvey and Christopher P. Wood.
David Wood's work has been shown in exhibitions in Leeds, York, Saddleworth, Scarborough, Ilkley, Birmingham, Eastbourne, Hull, Rickmansworth and Unna (Germany). He has had one-man shows in Batley, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Lincoln, Holmfirth, Leeds, Bradford, Trawden, Bolton and five very successful one-man shows in Germany, most recently in 2012.
His paintings are in private and public collections in the UK, Germany, USA, France, Austria, Australia and Eire.
In addition to his paintings David also produced scenic and costume designs for both amateur and professional companies. His graphic work ranged from poster and publicity design to text illustrations including for his own writings under the pen name David Foxton.
In 1963 David and his wife Judith were founder members of Dewsbury Arts Group. For over 50 years David was a pivotal figure in this theatre and visual arts organisation.
In the 2002 Queen’s Birthday Honours list David and Judith were both individually awarded MBEs for services to the Arts in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
David died in Macclesfield on 6th June 2020.
