A SINHALESE PIERCED IVORY PLAQUE Sri Lanka, 17th - 18th century Of rectangular shape, the centre decorated with a female goddess holding two lotuses by their stems, possibly a sinhalese variant of Lakshmi, her hair tied into a high knot reminiscent in shape of the Buddha's cranial protuberance (usnisa), her legs portrayed as a stylised vegetal tendril, flanked by two birds and framed within two bands of chequered pattern, mounted on a later velvet green frame resting on a wooden base, 7.1cm x 9.4cm excluding the removable frame.
