Sri Lanka, early 19th century

Shaped like a rectangular clutch handbag, made of two symmetrical panels of tortoiseshell pinned together with silver studs, elongated fittings and a silver mount with a lock at the top, resting on four short bulbous silver feet, overlaid with a silver plaque in the centre of the front, shaped and engraved with a Western monogram 'C. H.', 17cm x 18cm.
