A COLLECTION OF THREE EARLY BRITISH PORTRAITS c.1850s-60s
John Potter Cattley (1839-1853), Portrait taken prior to his departure to Quebec on the "Annie Jane" which ran aground off the Scottish Island of Vatersay in 1853. The ship sank with the loss of 350-400 passengers - including Cattley. Arched top albumen print, image size 86 x 67mm, in beveled gilt daguerreotype style frame, with manuscript inscription verso from a sibling.
William Darling (1784-1865) Portrait of the Longstone Lighthouse keeper, father of Grace Darling (1815-1842) famed for their highly publicized rescue of the Forfashire Shipwreck in 1838. Albumen print, image size, 107 x 80mm, pasted down onto contemporary paper support with manuscript titles and dates lower
Robert Bentley Todd (1809-1860) Best known for describing the condition postictal paralysis, known as Todd's palsy. He became a professor at King's College London, and was prominent in the opening of King's College Hospital in 1840. Oval albumen print, image size, 96 x 70mm, pasted onto contemporary paper support and framed (175 x 155mm)
