Belzoni (Giovanni Battista) Plates Illustrated of the Researches and Operations...in Egypt and Nubia,FIRST EDITION, 44 hand coloured engraved plates (26 full page), plate 26 marginal repairs, not affecting image, occasional light foxing; bound with Six New Plates Illustrative of the Researches and Operations of G. Belzoni in Egypt and Nubia, FIRST EDITION, 6 hand coloured lithograph plates, later half morocco, new endpapers, folio [490 x 605mm], John Murray, 1821-1822. *** The six new plates are very scarce, intended to accompany the author's narrative of the operations and recent discoveries within the pyramids, temples, tombs, and excavations, in Egypt and Nubia. They represent a fine pictorial record of the ruins and hieroglyphs of the region which practically no Europeans had yet seen. One plate is particularly telling of the times, as it depicts an event with a drove of men removing the colossal seven-ton bust of Young Memnon or Ramesses II from its original site, soon to be transferred by Belzoni to the British Museum where it still stands today.
