*** This miscellany was begun in 1834 and contains a wide range of essays and tales, including the first telling of 'The Story of the Three Bears' in chapter 129 (pp. 318-326). Volumes I through V of The Doctor appeared during Southey’s lifetime; Volumes VI and VII (not included here), edited by his son-in-law, were published in 1847, four years after Southey’s death (Lowndes, 2460).
