Arthur Tindell Hopwood ( July 15, 1897 – October 22, 1969 ) was a British paleontologist .
Hopwood came from a family of artists and studied zoology and geology in Manchester before becoming curator at the Natural History Museum from 1924 . There he worked on fossil mammals. Hopwood was close friends with George Gaylord Simpson .
In 1933 he first described the fossil ape genus Proconsul , more precisely the species Proconsul africanus . He named her after Consul , a monkey from London Zoo .
