Rayner's father, Samuel Rayner, was also an established painter and alongside his other artist friends, assisted in teaching Louise Rayner. She spent her early childhood in Derby before moving to London in her teenage years. Among her first exhibits included work at the Royal Academy in 1852. Following this, she displayed watercolours such as the present painting with the Society of Women Artists as well as the Society of British Artists in 1860.
