A RARE LATE 19TH CENTURY GERMAN WALNUT AND MARQUETRY SHELF FUSEE CUCKOO CLOCK ATTRIBUTED TO JOHANN BAPTISTE BEHA, FOR CAMERER KUSS & CO. the architectural case with shaped cornice over the square glazed front door, the sides with small hinged doors, over a shaped plinth base with glazed pendulum aperture, the white enamelled dial with Roman numerals, the twin fusee movement activating the bellows and the cuckoo which appears from an arched window at the top of the case, striking on a coiled gong, the inside of the back door with remains of a paper label form Camerer Kuss, with associated pendulum,  50cm high  The movement is ticking and the bellows and cuckoo are working but not fully tested or guaranteed.  Johann Baptist Beha was perhaps the most highly regarded maker of cuckoo clocks in the 19th century, he was responsible for numerous innovations including the use of fusee movements. The main importers of his clocks were Camerer, Kuss & Co., and they also exported his clocks to India. Beha usually marked his clocks with a stick on label, and there is evidence on the inside of the back door of an applied label which is now missing, as well as the Camerer Kuss label, and so it is likely the clock did once bear his name. Camerer Kuss were based at 56 New Oxford Street , London & 2 Broad Street, Bloomsbury, & 186 Uxbridge Road, Shepherds Bush. In about 1900, the company changed it’s name from Camerer Kuss & Co. to Camerer Cuss & Co and so we know that this clock was retailed before 1900.
