One of Whistler's most famous paintings is "Whistler's Mother" (1871), also known as "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1." The painting depicts Whistler's mother seated in profile against a neutral background, exemplifying his skill in creating evocative compositions and exploring tone and colour.

Henry Irving, born John Henry Brodribb (1838–1905), was an influential English actor and theater manager. He is best known for his association with the Lyceum Theatre in London and for his partnership with actress Ellen Terry.
