THREE MEDIEVAL IRANIAN GREEN-SPLASHED POTTERY VESSELS
Possibly Nishapur, Eastern Iran, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, and Afghanistan, 10th - 12th century

Comprising a small conical pottery bowl, resting on a short circular foot, the white slip-covered earthenware body painted in a greenish brown slip imitating 10th-century Iraqi lustreware models, the interior decorated with a large hare with big drop-shaped and pointy ears, surrounded by green splashes and brown V-shaped marks, the exterior plain, 16cm diam. and 6cm high; and two incised and splashed pottery vessels, including a large bowl with broad shoulders and straight rim, reminiscent of polychrome splashed 12th-century Aghkand wares, the interior incised with a stylised cross in-filled with vegetal sprays and the contours highlighted with a double beading band in light and dark brown, the exterior painted with fleshy vegetal stems against a white slip-covered ground, 22.5cm diam. and 10.8cm high; and a circular saucer with a flattened everted rim, resting on three tapering conical feet, the interior incised with an interlocking geometric stellar pattern, the negative space in-filled with cross-hatched grids, the rim incised with scrolling trellis, 18.5cm diam. and 5cm high.
