Shackleton (Ernest)

Schackleton (Ernest)

Typed letter signed ('E.H. Shackleton') to Captain J.C. Robinson, on 'British Antarctic Expedition 1907' headed paper, reading "Please excuse my not answering your letter before but I have had a heavy pressure of work as you can imagine. I much appreciate your very kind letter, and the present you send for the ship, which will be used you may rest assured", one page, light folding marks, minor yellowing, 4to, 9 Regent Street, London, 13 August 1907.

Shackleton and his crew set off on the Nimrod on January 1st, 1908. The aim of the expedition was the conquest of the South Pole. Although this this was not attained, a group led by geology professor Edgeworth David reached the estimated location of the South Magnetic Pole, and the expedition also achieved the first ascent of Mount Erebus, Antarctica's second highest volcano. Such achievements attracted nationwide interest, made Shackleton a public hero and earned him a knighthood.
