Probable correction in the author’s hand

[Evelyn (John)] & Rose (John),

The English Vineyard Vindicated…,

First edition, double-page engraved plate of the ordering and binding of vines, woodcut initial letter, blank leaves present, minor chipping to title in margins, contemporary ink correction in line 3, p.5: strong altered to stony, [Wing R 1935; ESTC R16258; Henery 303; Keynes 80], contemporary mottled calf gilt, a.e.g., upper board loose, some loss to spine, worn, small 8vo, J. Grismond for John Crook, at the Ship in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1666.

***“In one of my copies, bound in contemporary mottled calf, gilt, gilt edges, there is a correction in the author’s hand, strong in line 3, p.5, being altered to stony.” (Geoffrey Keynes, John Evelyn: A Study in Bibliophily, 1968) Keynes' copy is currently in the Keynes Collection, acquired in 1982 by Cambridge University Library [Keynes.B.3.4]. (Confirmed by CUL librarian Liam Sims prior to sale.) The hand in the present copy is identical.

One of the earliest works on English viticulture (wine growing), written by Evelyn under the King's gardener’s instruction. The rarity of this printing is often attributed to the Great Fire of London.
