British prime Ministers
Four autograph letters by prominent 19th century British Prime Ministers, comprising: George Canning (to "My dear Sir Andrew", informing the recipient that his daughter Harriet is about to marry Lord Clanricarde, two pages, 8vo, 11 October 1825); Lord Palmerston (letter to Mrs Ashley reading "I return you Captain Lake's testimonials and will not fail to bear in mind the wishes which you have expressed in his favour...but my means of offering employment to any person are inconceivably scanty", two pages, 8vo, 26 April 1854); Lord Salisbury (saying he cannot recommend the recipient for a certain position as he promised the Duke of Wellington to do so only for "men who were known to me personally, upon whose merits I could vouch from my own experience", three pages, 8vo, Hatfield House, 11 July 1874) and Lord Rosebery (letter to Mr Cornway "I have heard from Lincoln about Vaile. It looks to me as if he ought to do very well...As to the journal, I know nothing. I am indeed entirely ignorant of journalism as a whole, and having one burnt my fingers in it, never wish to know more", two pages, 8vo, 24 November 1899) (4)
