TWO STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY TREACLE-GLAZED MODELS OF LIONS, early 19th Century, both modelled standing to the right, their front paws resting on a ball, one with a Napoleonic soldier at his feet, on a foliate moulded rectangular plinth base, 32cm wide, the other on a rectangular stepped plinth base, 32cm wide (2) FOOTNOTES: These models are based upon the marble sculpture of the Medici Lion sculpted by Flaminio Vacca in 1600, now in Florence. The model of the lion with the soldier is emblematic of Britain (the lion) and France (the soldier).
