PROVENANCE:
From the Gallerie Mazarine, Paris, Monna Besse collection, thence by descent.

Gisèle Celan-Lestrange, artist and the wife of the renowned poet Paul Celan. She was a sculptor and painter, and her work was heavily influenced by her interest in mythology and the natural world.

Celan-Lestrange's sculptures often featured abstract, organic forms that seemed to echo the shapes of natural objects like shells, stones, and bones. She was also known for her use of unusual materials, such as wire, paper, and found objects, which she incorporated into her sculptures to create textures and patterns.
