Miriam Coles Harris (1834-1925) was an American novelist who lived and worked in New York. The Sutherlands was first published by Rudd and Carleton, New York, 1862.

Many editions of this novel were produced between 1862 and 1894. Despite an exhaustive search of library holdings in the United States, Cyril Fry was unable to find a trace of an illustrated edition. The present series of six original illustrations by A.E. Kosh, the American illustrator and engraver, are fully annotated on the reverse. Kosh was born in Germany in 1838 and emigrated to America in 1868 where he died in 1897. It is possible that this illustrated edition was not published unless there is still an untraced edition that Fry was never able to find.
