AFTER GIOVANNI PIETRO RIZZOLI, CALLED IL GIAMPIETRINO (MILAN 1480/85-1553)
Christ (with the symbol of the Holy Trinity)
oil on panel
54 x 41 cm
The present panel can be compared to a version held by St. Petersburg Hermitage (inv. no. 1520). The work was first ascribed to Bernardino Luini, now given to Giampietrino, one of the most important members of the circle of Leonardo da Vinci. Renowned during his lifetime for images characterised by their physicality and expressiveness. In the original version Christ is depicted showing the viewer a triangle symbolising the Holy Trinity with His left hand, whilst gesturing towards Himself with His right, the fine, almost androgynous facial features and long delicate wavy hair clearly influenced by Leonardo. The present panel (with the symbol of the triangle visible under ultra violet and raking light, after an intervention by a later hand).
