A LATE 16TH / EARLY 17TH CENTURY ITALIAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF DIANA THE HUNTRESS WITH A HOUND the standing nude with crescent moon diadem her seated hound at the ground beside her, with an integral shaped base, later applied on an ebonised, stepped plinth, the bronze 14cm high, 24cm high overall Provenance: Inherited by the present owner from a relative in Vienna. Please see the old photograph of the bronze in situ in a panelled room at the family property. Other examples of this small statuette have appeared at auction in recent years, but the model has not been attributed to a specific sculptor. The Mannerist proportions and spirally turned, contra-posto pose of the figure are features reminiscent of the work of the great Italian Mannerist sculptors Girolamo Campagna (1549–1625) and Tiziano Aspetti (1559-1606) both working in Venice in the late 16th century and early 17th century.
