A rare Charles I mid-17^th century ivory portrait miniature gaming token, English dated 1641

Of circular form, painted with a of Sir Francis Drake, within black dress and large ruff, glazed with incised and blackened date 16 and 41 either side. The miniature signed SC to lower right. The obverse with an incised and blackened crest of a hand issuing out of clouds drawing a ship round a globe, edge with simple lines.

Diameter – 4.6 cm / 1.85 inches

Given the approximate date of Sir Francis Drake’s birth as circa 1540, this token may very well commemorate this centenary of his birth.
