MANNER OF ALBRECHT DÜRER (NUREMBERG 1471-1528)
Portrait of a man with a rosary
oil on canvas laid on panel
50.5 x 35.8 cm

The present work is a fine and detailed 18/19th century interpretation of Dürer's masterly attention to his detailed life-like portraiture, capturing the sitter with intimacy.

German portraiture of the 15th century was a significant period in the development of European art. The Northern Renaissance, as it is often called, was characterised by a renewed interest to capture the individuality and personality of the sitter in portraits.
One of the distinctive features of Dürer's portraits is his attention to detail. He often included intricate patterns and textures in his works, such as the detailed fur collar in his Self-Portrait at 28 Years Old or the lace ruff in his portrait of Maximilian I. Dürer's portraits are also notable for their psychological depth and sensitivity, which convey a sense of the subject's personality and inner life.
