David Cox, born in Birmingham in 1783. He is considered one of the greatest British landscape painters of the 19th century, known for his romantic and atmospheric depictions of the natural world.

Cox began his career as a scene painter for a local theatre company before becoming a professional artist in his early twenties. He gained recognition for his watercolours, which he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London. In addition to his landscapes, Cox also produced portraits and genre scenes, but it was his landscapes that earned him the most acclaim.

Cox was known for his ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of a scene, often through the use of bold, expressive brushstrokes and a rich, earthy colour palette. He was also skilled in depicting the effects of light and weather on the natural world, such as the misty haze of a rainy day or the soft glow of the setting sun.

Throughout his career, Cox traveled extensively throughout Britain and Europe, sketching and painting the landscapes he encountered. He was particularly drawn to the Welsh countryside and produced many of his most famous works based on his experiences there.
