Our summer Modern British & Irish Art auction encompasses a wide variety of paintings, works on paper and sculpture from the late 19th century to the modern day. The auction is centred around three important private collections, one from Europe and two from the UK.
The first of these collections come from the estate of Peter Adam. The filmmaker and producer was described by David Attenborough as “one of the key figures who helped to establish the character of BBC Two during its golden age”. He was the biographer of famous designer Eileen Gray, and close friend of Keith Vaughan and Prunella Clough, who’s works are being offered in the sale.
The other two properties come from esteemed domestic private collections amassed over a lifetime, with one featuring direct acquisition links from John Hoyland and Patrick Caulfield.
Alongside the aforementioned artists, the sale also features significant artworks by Vanessa Bell, Anne Redpath, Sir John Lavery, John Piper, Sandra Blow, Roger Hilton, Duncan Grant, Christopher Wood, Helen Bradley, Austin Osman Spare, Mary Potter and Ken Howard.
