Highlights of the sale include a 1562 edition of Claudius Ptolemy’s seminal Geographia, which represented the geographical knowledge of the 2nd-century Roman Empire, with an estimate of £3,000 - £4,000. A 1964 first edition of Chairman Mao’s Quotations, known worldwide as the ‘Little Red Book’, which still in its printed wrappers was intended for high-ranking officers only, comes for sale with an estimate of £3,000 - £4,000.
The costume design archive of Sally Jacobs (1932 – 2020), a British stage designer whose career was innovative, wide-ranging, and influential takes centre stage of the sale. In Jacobs’ signature style, they colourfully depict an array of British acting royalty. Comparable works are held by institutions including the Harvard Theatre Collection and Victoria & Albert Museum. Lot 161, it has an estimate of £16,000 - £18,000.
