PROVENANCE:
Lorser Feitelson, a painter and art theorist, played a significant role in the development of abstract art in California. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, and began his artistic training at the Art Students League in New York City.

Feitelson initially worked as an illustrator and graphic designer before becoming more involved in the fine arts. In the 1930s, he moved to Los Angeles and became a key figure in the California abstract art movement. He co-founded the Post-Surrealist group, which aimed to promote non-representational art and explore the boundaries of abstraction.

Feitelson's artistic style evolved over time. In the 1920s, he painted in a representational manner, influenced by modernism and post-impressionism. However, he gradually shifted towards abstraction, incorporating geometric shapes and vibrant colors in his work. He developed a style known as "Hard-Edge" painting, characterised by precisely defined geometric forms and sharply delineated colour areas.

As an art theorist, Feitelson wrote extensively on the subject of abstract art and its significance. He advocated for the use of abstract forms as a means of expressing universal ideas and emotions. He believed that abstract art had the potential to convey a deeper understanding of the world, transcending mere representation.
